Kyung Hee Global Virtual School
Kyung Hee University is offering the Korean Studies Global Virtual School for foreign students, which have gained attention worldwide due to the popularity of Hallyu and K-Culutre.
Participants will be introduced to various fields of Koreanology and have a deeper understanding of Korean culture.
Courses
This lecture aims to identify important branches of Korean pop-culture and explain the context of Korean pop culture history diachronically. Through this, it is possible to distinguish the public’s structure of feeling and zeitgeist by era from the perspective of taste, aesthetics, and ideology. Furthermore, the lecturer views the interrelationship between political, social, industrial history and pop culture history, and reflects on the daily lives and desires of the public at the time.

This course is a basic Korean language course aimed at beginner-level Korean language learners. The content focuses on scenes from K-dramas. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing are taught in an integrated manner, but the focus is on speaking, so the course is structured to teach not only understanding Korean, but its actual use as well.

Students will learn about the Korean alphabet, Hangeul and examine the emotions in the letters and sounds of Hangeul. They will also have time to look at Hangeul education and Hangeul in the world.

The purpose of this lecture is to explore the characteristics of Korean culture and understand cultural genes of Koreans by looking at the culture inherent in Korean language. To this end, this lecture examines the linguistic culture including Koreans’ view of languages, texts, idioms, body languages and also examines Koreans’ view of humans, nature, families, and the necessities of life. It also studies areas such as basic language knowledge, language skills, culture, and etc. based on “International Standard Curriculum of the Korean Language.” Finally, the lecture helps students to improve inter-cultural communication skills by providing opportunities to compare Korean and their own cultures.

Through maps and geography of the Korean Peninsula and the Republic of Korea, we examine the place, landmarks, and people who played important roles in Korean history and study how those places, landmarks, and people were portrayed in the classical literature. Through this, we will learn about the spatial experience, historical site, scenic spot, and local characters that enriched the classical literature, and learn how each geographic space, experience and famous place appear when it is embodied in the classical Korean literature.

In this course, we will examine the incidents that were turning points in Korean popular culture and explore how they have formed today's K-Culture. To do this, we will take a comprehensive look at the popular culture of the 1990s when the globalization of Korean popular culture began, and investigate how various elements of popular culture, such as movies and K-Pop, have developed.

- Students may request a Transcript of Records to be recognized by their home universities according to their individual standards. Ask your university about credit transfer availability.

Admission Requirements Before You Apply
- Only undergraduate/postgraduate students enrolled in accredited higher education institutions located overseas are eligible to participate and those who have submitted a valid English version of their Certificate of Enrollment will be considered. Students will be notified of their acceptance or rejection prior to the commencement of the program.
- Virtual School consists of KHU credit-bearing courses. However, your home institution may or may not accept them as credits towards your degree. Consult with your home institution about credit questions.
